How to make it
Three details, one chart
- 1
Date of birth
The day sets where the slow planets were: Guru, Shani, Rahu and Ketu.
- 2
Time of birth
The time sets your lagna and houses, which change roughly every two hours. Use the time on your birth certificate if you have it.
- 3
Place of birth
The place gives latitude, longitude and time zone, so sunrise and the rising sign are calculated for where you were born.
Janm patrika
Kundli, janm patrika, birth chart: the same map
A kundli (also called janam kundli, janm patrika or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born, divided into twelve houses. Each house governs an area of life, such as self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, marriage, transformation, fortune, career, gains and letting go.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned to the fixed stars. That is why your Vedic rashi is often one sign earlier than the sun sign in a Western horoscope. Neither is wrong; they measure from different starting points.
Reading it
Four things to look at first
Your lagna
The sign rising in the east at birth. It describes temperament and the body, and it decides which planet rules your chart.
Your moon sign
Where Chandra sat. Jyotish uses it for rashifal, compatibility and sade sati.
Your nakshatra
The lunar mansion of your Moon. It sets the starting point of your dasha and is used in naming and matching.
Your current dasha
The planetary period you are in now. It tells you which part of the chart is most active in this chapter of life.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Is the kundli really free?
Yes. Making your birth chart in Kalpa is free. Some deeper layers, such as house by house readings, divisional charts and dasha chapters, are part of Kalpa Pro.
What if I do not know my birth time?
You can still see planet positions and your moon sign for most dates, but the lagna and houses may be wrong. If your time is approximate, say so, and a guide will read the parts that do not depend on it.
Why is my Vedic rashi different from my zodiac sign?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The difference today is a little over 24 degrees, so many people shift back one sign.
What is the difference between moon sign and lagna?
The moon sign is where the Moon was at birth and describes your mind and emotions. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon and describes your self and body. Both matter; the lagna needs an accurate birth time.
Can I make a kundli for someone else?
Yes. You can cast a chart for any birth details, for example a partner, child or parent.
