Kundli milan
Kundli milan, koota by koota
Enter both sets of birth details and Kalpa runs the traditional Ashtakoota match: eight kootas, 36 gunas, and the doshas families ask about. Every number comes with a plain explanation of what it is measuring.
Guna matching is a traditional guide to compatibility, not a guarantee. Kalpa guides who explain a match are AI guides.
The eight kootas
How the 36 gunas add up
Each koota compares the two moon signs or nakshatras on one aspect of married life.
| Koota | Gunas | What it compares |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual temperament and ego; read from the groom's and bride's sides |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and who naturally leads |
| Tara | 3 | Wellbeing and fortune, from the count between birth nakshatras |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and instinctive compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between the moon sign lords: how your minds meet |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: deva, manushya or rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Moon sign relationship: family welfare, finances and growth |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny, from the three nadis |
Total: 36. Traditionally 18 or more is acceptable, and 24 or more is considered a good match.
Doshas in matching
The flags families ask about
Nadi dosha
Both partners share the same nadi, which scores 0 of 8. Tradition treats it seriously and also lists cancellations, such as the same rashi with different nakshatras.
Bhakoot dosha
The moon signs sit 6 and 8, 5 and 9, or 2 and 12 from each other. It is often cancelled when the two sign lords are friends or the same planet.
Gana mismatch
A deva and rakshasa pairing scores low. Read with Graha Maitri, it tells you how much patience the temperaments need.
Mangal dosha
Not part of the 36 gunas, but checked alongside. When both partners have it, tradition considers it balanced.
How it works in Kalpa
Match, understand, decide
- 1
Add both birth details
Date, time and place for each person, and whose side is the bride's and groom's, because Varna scores differently by side.
- 2
Read the score
See the total and each koota, with the doshas and cancellations that apply.
- 3
Save and share
A saved match keeps the same reading over time, so what the family sees next month matches what you saw today.
- 4
Talk it through
Ask a guide what the weak kootas mean for the two of you in daily life.
FAQ
Questions people ask
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Traditionally 18 out of 36 is the minimum, 18 to 24 is average, and above 24 is considered good. Individual kootas like Nadi and Bhakoot are also checked on their own.
Is kundli milan based on moon sign or sun sign?
Moon sign and nakshatra. That is why accurate birth details for both people matter.
Can a low score marriage be happy?
Yes. The score flags areas that need care; it does not decide a marriage. Many families also look at the full charts, the navamsa and mangal dosha before deciding.
Is the full milan reading free?
The match itself is available in Kalpa. The detailed reading and chatting about the match with a guide are part of Kalpa Pro; the app shows what is included.
Why does Kalpa ask which side is the bride and groom?
Varna koota is scored asymmetrically in the traditional method. Without the sides, Kalpa leaves Varna unscored rather than guessing.
