  • Vishnu and Guru's day: yellow, teachers, banana plant worship, learning.
  • A soft star: music, clothes, friendship, celebrations.

Better avoided

  • Avoid oil and heavy food if you keep the vrat.
  • Washing hair and cutting nails are left for another day in the tradition.
  • Hard confrontations sit badly today.

Reading a panchang

What the five limbs mean

Tithi

The lunar day: each 12 degrees the Moon moves ahead of the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, from Pratipada to Purnima or Amavasya.

Vara

The weekday, each ruled by a graha, from Ravivar (Surya) to Shanivar (Shani). The Hindu day begins at sunrise.

Nakshatra

The lunar mansion the Moon is passing through, one of 27. It colours the day and matters most for muhurat.

Yoga

One of 27 combinations of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, read for the general quality of the day.

Karana

Half a tithi. There are 11 karanas; Vishti, also called Bhadra, is avoided for beginnings.

Rahu kaal

One eighth of the daytime at a set slot each weekday, traditionally avoided for starting anything new.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Why does the panchang change by city?

Sunrise, sunset and the timing windows depend on where you are. Tithi and nakshatra change at the same moment everywhere, but the local clock time differs.

Which month system does this use?

The masa shown is purnimanta, the convention common in North India, where a month ends on Purnima. Kalpa also knows the amanta convention used in much of South and West India.

When does the Hindu day begin?

At sunrise. A tithi or nakshatra that is running at sunrise usually names the day.

Is the panchang free in Kalpa?

Yes. The daily panchang and shubh samay windows are free for everyone.

The panchang for where you are

Your city, your sunrise, every day.
