Mangal dosha
Manglik? Here is what it actually means
Few words in Indian astrology create more worry than manglik. Mangal dosha is a specific placement of Mars, it is very common, and tradition lists many ways it is cancelled. Check your chart and understand it before anyone frightens you with it.

The definition
What makes a chart manglik
Mangal dosha is formed when Mangal (Mars) sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the kundli. Many South Indian traditions also include the 2nd house. Because these houses touch self, home, marriage, longevity and the bed, a fiery Mars there is said to bring friction into married life.
Most astrologers check the placement from the lagna, and many also check it from the Moon and from Venus. Counted this way, a large share of all charts show some form of mangal dosha, which is itself a good reason not to panic.
Cancellations
When the dosha is considered cancelled or softened
Classical and popular texts list many exceptions. These are the ones you will hear most often.
Both partners are manglik
The most widely accepted cancellation: two Mars placements are said to balance each other.
Mars in its own or exalted sign
Mangal in Mesha or Vrishchika (own signs) or Makara (exaltation) is considered strong and less harmful.
Jupiter's influence
Guru aspecting Mars, or sitting with it, is traditionally said to calm its heat.
Specific sign and house pairs
Several texts cancel the dosha for certain signs in certain houses, for example Mars in Karka or Simha in some positions.
With age
A popular belief holds that the effect softens after about 28, when Mars is said to mature. It is folk wisdom rather than a classical rule.

FAQ
Questions people ask
Is mangal dosha dangerous?
Traditionally it is read as a tendency toward friction, impatience or delay in marriage, not a sentence. Its effect depends on the rest of the chart and the many cancellations texts describe.
Can a manglik marry a non-manglik?
Many do. Families usually look at cancellations, the strength of Mars, and the full match. A guide can explain what applies in your specific charts.
How do I know if I am manglik?
Make your kundli in Kalpa. It shows which house Mars occupies from the lagna and whether the traditional mangal dosha condition is met.
Does Kalpa sell remedies for mangal dosha?
Kalpa suggests upay from your chart, most of which are free practices like mantra and charity. It never presents a purchase as a cure.
